1. Who is the Holy Spirit? We must start all
the way back in the book of Genesis. In the first chapter, in
verse 2, it says that the Spirit of God was hovering over the
face of the waters. In verse 26, notice that God said, "...let
us make man
". In Heb. 9:14 there is the description
of "the eternal Spirit". In that same verse God and
Christ are also named. In many other places three separate yet
united personalities are mentioned in the same context. This
is a mystery that man can never fully comprehend, yet it is
too obvious to dismiss. It is very beneficial to study this
subject and seek to understand God's great plan for man, here
and in eternity.
2. What is the work and mission of the Holy Spirit?
In John 15: & 16: Jesus said when the Spirit of TRUTH is
come He will testify of Me, He will glorify Me, and He will
convict of sin. In Acts chapter 1, He will come to give the
apostles power to witness. This is just a starting place to
begin your study of the Holy Spirit. It will give you a better
understanding if you start back in the Old Testament to trace
the working of the Holy Spirit. Remember that God is the author
of the entire Bible.
3. What are the benefits to the life of the believer?
First, Jesus commanded His disciples to tarry in Jerusalem
until they were endued with power from on high, which was the
promise of the Father; because they could not fulfill their
mission without this power. (Luke 24:49) Second, He is
the comforter, the teacher, the source of peace and joy, convicts
of sin, reveals truth, reminds them of the teachings of Jesus,
etc. The list is very long and as you study the Scriptures you
will add many more benefits to your reasons why you need to
be filled with the Holy Spirit.
4. How do you become filled with the Spirit? The first
step will be to come to Jesus for salvation, fully surrendering
your heart and life to Him as Savior, Lord and Master, and King
of your heart. (John 3:1-21) Second, reading the 4 Gospels and
the book of Acts will give you a greater understanding of how
the Holy Spirit makes such a big difference in the life and
work of Jesus and the apostles. The epistles of Paul will give
you much instruction concerning the working of the Holy Spirit
in the individual lives of the apostles and ministers of the
Gospel. Third, now that you have come to an understanding of
the need of this power of the Holy Spirit, you must ask, and
believe that this gift is for you also. See Luke 11:1-13.
Let nothing hinder your seeking for God's will for you. It
most certainly is His will that you be filled with His Spirit,
empowered to do His will, and He will produce the fruits of
the Spirit in your life when you walk in obedience to His will
and plan for your life.
